Denmark's Migration Model

Denmark's strict approach to asylum and immigration is drawing international attention as other European governments, including Britain, look for ways to counter the rise of the far right. The Danish government, led by a center-left party, has implemented tough policies such as confiscating valuables from asylum seekers, cutting benefits, and making permanent residency harder to obtain. These measures have sharply reduced the number of asylum seekers and helped the ruling party hold off far-right challengers, with leaders arguing that strict immigration controls are necessary to preserve Denmark's welfare state.

However, the model is facing criticism at home. In recent municipal elections, Denmark's ruling party lost ground in Copenhagen as voters expressed concern over the perceived cruelty and impact of the policies, especially on legal immigrants and refugees. Experts warn that such deterrence strategies can undermine integration and increase poverty and crime among refugees. As other countries consider adopting similar measures, questions remain about whether Denmark's approach can be replicated elsewhere, given its small size and relative homogeneity. The true test of the model's political sustainability will come in Denmark's next national election.
