The United Nations Security Council will visit Syria and Lebanon next week as part of its efforts to reengage with the region. The ambassadors from fifteen member states are scheduled to arrive in Damascus on December 4, where they will meet with Syria's new leadership, including President Ahmed Al-Sharaa. This visit comes shortly before the anniversary of the removal of Syria's former ruler, Bashar Assad, and follows the recent lifting of sanctions against Al-Sharaa.
Following their stop in Syria, the Security Council officials will travel to Beirut on December 5. There, they will meet with peacekeepers from the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, which is set to withdraw by the end of 2027. The visit takes place amid renewed tensions, as Lebanon accuses Israel of violating a recent ceasefire agreement by continuing military actions within Lebanese territory.
