UK's would-be top diplomat says Starmer failing Israel, flubbing postwar Gaza role

Priti Patel, the United Kingdom's shadow foreign secretary, has sharply criticized Prime Minister Keir Starmer's approach to the Middle East, accusing his government of sidelining Britain from key diplomatic efforts regarding Israel and Gaza. During a visit to Jerusalem, Patel argued that the United Kingdom has 'abdicated responsibility' and failed to take a leading role in mediating the conflict or supporting the elimination of Hamas. She also condemned the government's recognition of a Palestinian state, claiming it emboldened Hamas and undermined efforts to secure hostages' release.

Patel further accused the Labour government of inadequately addressing antisemitism, both within the party and across the country, despite Starmer's efforts to distance Labour from its controversial past under Jeremy Corbyn. She called for tougher action against antisemitic protests and legal reforms to combat hate speech. Labour officials and supporters have rejected Patel's criticisms, defending Starmer's record on antisemitism and foreign policy. The debate comes amid rising antisemitism in Britain and growing concerns among the Jewish community about their future in the country.
