Leaked documents have revealed that Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke held secret discussions with Save the Children regarding the return of women and children who had lived under the Islamic State in Syria. During the June meeting, Burke declined formal government assistance for the repatriation but explored alternative ways to achieve the same outcome without direct government involvement. The minister also requested a senior official to leave the room to allow for a private conversation with a campaigner whose daughter had returned from Syria.
The revelations come as Australian authorities prepare for more returns of women and children from former Islamic State territories. The government maintains it only processed passports and did not facilitate repatriation, while the Opposition is demanding further explanation about Burke's role. Authorities are continuing to monitor and investigate those returning to Australia from the Middle East.
