Ex-general to lead probe into IDF's handling of intel on Hamas attack plans pre-Oct 7

The Chief of Staff of the Israeli military has appointed a retired general to lead a new panel investigating how the military handled intelligence about Hamas's plans for a large-scale attack prior to October 7. This move follows criticism of earlier internal probes, which failed to address key intelligence warnings about Hamas's intentions, known within the military as 'Jericho's Walls.' The newly formed team, led by Maj. Gen. Roni Numa, will include several other former senior officers and focus on reviewing intelligence reports dating back to 2018.

The decision comes after a separate review found that many of the military's initial investigations into the October 7 failures were inadequate and overlooked critical topics. The Chief of Staff presented a summary of the findings to top military officials, outlining lessons and recommendations for integrating these insights into future operations and planning.

An oversight committee will be established to monitor the implementation of these lessons, and senior officers will participate in learning sessions to discuss how to apply them within their units. The military leadership emphasized the importance of confronting past failures and ensuring that lessons are thoroughly integrated to prevent similar incidents in the future.
