Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam has urged a visiting United Nations delegation to consider establishing a follow-up force in southern Lebanon after the current peacekeeping mission ends in 2026. The United Nations Security Council recently voted to terminate the longstanding peacekeeping force, which has been stationed along the border with Israel for nearly fifty years. During talks with the delegation, Salam suggested that a smaller observer force, similar to the one on Syria's border with Israel, could help Lebanese troops maintain stability in the volatile region. The United Nations delegation has not yet responded to the proposal, but Lebanese President Joseph Aoun expressed openness to continued international support in southern Lebanon.
