Bondi Beach lifeguards have been widely praised for their bravery after running towards gunfire to help victims during Sunday's tragic shooting near the Bondi Pavilion. Among them, Jackson 'Jacko' Doolan was captured in a viral image sprinting barefoot with life-saving equipment, symbolising the courage shown by the lifeguard team as chaos unfolded. Lifeguards and surf lifesavers from neighbouring beaches rushed to the scene, performing first aid and CPR, carrying the wounded to safety, and exhausting all available medical supplies as they assisted emergency services.
The Bondi lifeguard clubhouse became a makeshift hospital as responders worked through the night, while some lifeguards conducted water rescues for those fleeing into the ocean. Local officials and the community have commended the lifeguards' selflessness and quick action, with many sharing messages of support and gratitude. The tragedy, which claimed at least 15 lives including a young girl, has left responders and the community deeply shaken, with counselling services now being provided to those affected. Alongside the lifeguards, two civilians were also recognised for their heroic efforts in confronting the alleged shooters during the attack.
