A senior Hamas official has stated that ongoing talks in Miami must focus on ending what he described as Israeli violations of the Gaza ceasefire. He emphasized the need for an agreement that halts these actions and compels Israel to adhere to previous accords, specifically the one reached in Sharm el-Sheikh. The official also called for increased humanitarian aid to Gaza and the implementation of remaining elements of a broader peace plan, which includes reconstruction and steps toward Palestinian self-governance and statehood.
The Sharm el-Sheikh agreement, brokered in October, outlined a ceasefire, partial Israeli withdrawal, the return of hostages, and the release of Palestinian prisoners. While the United States is hosting the current round of talks in Florida, the broader peace plan remains stalled, as Hamas has refused to disarm and violence continues despite the truce. The fate of some hostages, including one whose body remains in Gaza, is still unresolved, with both sides disputing responsibility.
