More than 1,000 patients in Gaza have died while waiting for urgent medical evacuation since July 2024, according to the World Health Organization. Despite efforts by the United Nations agency and its partners, who have evacuated over 10,600 patients with severe health conditions since the war began, many more remain in need of critical care outside Gaza. The reported death toll is likely an underestimate, and the organization is urging more countries to accept patients and restore medical evacuation routes to the West Bank, including East Jerusalem. Currently, over 16,500 patients are estimated to require treatment abroad, with some experts suggesting the actual number is much higher. While more than 30 countries have accepted patients, only a few have taken significant numbers, highlighting the urgent need for expanded international support.
