AG slams government's 'political' Oct 7 inquiry: 'Tailor-made for coalition's needs'

Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara has strongly criticized government-backed legislation to create a politically appointed commission of inquiry into the October 7 Hamas attack, calling it 'tailor-made' for the coalition's interests. In her published opinion, Baharav-Miara warned that the proposed panel would politicize the investigation, undermine professional standards, and harm the credibility of any future independent inquiry. The bill, set for cabinet approval, would allow politicians to select committee members with minimal qualifications, prompting opposition parties to vow a boycott and demand a state commission led by a retired justice.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has argued that a state commission lacks public trust due to its judicial appointments, despite previous support for such a panel and polling that shows public preference for an independent inquiry. Critics, including bereaved families and political opponents, have condemned the plan as a 'cover-up' and a 'political scam,' accusing the government of seeking to control the investigation and avoid accountability. Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi dismissed the attorney general's objections, insisting the coalition's inquiry is necessary for justice. Protests are planned in response to the government's move.
