Coalition lawmakers have voted down a proposed bill that would have provided significant tax breaks to military reservists who served since October 7, 2023. The bill, introduced by the opposition, sought to grant a 50 percent discount on municipal property taxes for reservists during their deployment period, with the Interior Ministry compensating local authorities for the lost revenue.
Supporters of the bill argued that it reflected important societal values, especially in light of ongoing debates about exemptions from military service. However, government representatives countered that existing laws already allow for smaller discounts and that there are insufficient resources and budgets to support the expanded benefits proposed.
The decision to defeat the bill was supported by a majority of coalition lawmakers, including some who have previously opposed other government policies related to military service. The bill may be revisited in the future, but for now, no additional tax relief will be provided to reservists.
