Experts have revealed that traditional heavy breakfasts like the Full English are among the worst choices for hangover recovery, ranking last in a study of popular hangover meals from ten countries. Instead, meals rich in fluids, fermented foods, lean proteins, and vegetables—such as Japanese miso soup with rice and pickles—were found to be most effective for easing symptoms and restoring hydration. Dishes from Korea and Sweden also scored highly, thanks to their balance of nutrients and gut-friendly ingredients.
The research highlights that greasy and sugary foods can worsen dehydration and trigger energy crashes, while lighter broths and soups provide steady energy and support metabolic recovery. Nutritionists recommend starting with hydrating foods, combining lean proteins with vegetables, and including fermented items for gut health. The study also debunks popular hangover remedies and emphasizes moderation in alcohol consumption as the best prevention.
Different types of alcohol can cause specific hangover symptoms, with darker spirits and red wine linked to more severe headaches and nausea due to higher levels of congeners and natural substances. Sugary drinks like mulled wine can lead to dizziness and fatigue, while dehydration remains a common culprit behind most hangover symptoms. Experts advise opting for lighter alcoholic beverages and nutrient-rich meals to minimize the after-effects of festive celebrations.
