Finnish police have seized and searched a cargo ship, the Fitburg, after undersea telecommunications cables in the Baltic Sea were damaged. The vessel, flagged in St. Vincent and the Grenadines and traveling from Russia to Israel, was found dragging its anchor for hours in the Gulf of Finland, where the cable was damaged. The crew, consisting of 14 members from Russia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Kazakhstan, was detained as part of an investigation into aggravated disruption of telecommunications and sabotage.
Authorities are also investigating similar incidents, including another cable damaged between Sweden and Estonia, and a previous case last year involving a tanker linked to Russia. While the motives behind the damage remain unclear, experts and political leaders have raised concerns about potential sabotage targeting critical infrastructure amid ongoing tensions following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Repair work on the cables is expected to begin once weather conditions improve, and cooperation between Finnish, Estonian, and Swedish authorities is ongoing.
