Lucy Connolly, a former childminder from Northampton, has received a warning from probation officers that she could be recalled to prison after resharing a controversial post on X and giving a televised interview. Connolly, who was jailed in 2024 for stirring up racial hatred, is currently serving the remainder of her sentence on licence and must adhere to strict conditions. The warning follows her retweet of a message joking about President Donald Trump removing Prime Minister Keir Starmer, which probation officials deemed inappropriate. Connolly expressed frustration over the lack of clarity regarding what she is permitted to say online and in media appearances, arguing that her recent posts do not incite violence or hatred.
The situation has reignited debate over free speech and the boundaries set for those released on licence, especially in cases involving sensitive political and social issues. Connolly also compared her treatment to that of activist Alaa Abd El-Fattah, who was criticised for past social media posts but has not faced similar legal consequences. She remains under supervision until the end of her sentence, with the threat of prison recall if she breaches her licence conditions.
