A commuter train derailed near Barcelona after a containment wall collapsed onto the tracks during heavy rain, resulting in the death of the driver and injuries to around 20 passengers. Emergency services responded with numerous ambulances and firefighter units to the scene in Gelida, highlighting ongoing concerns about the region's underfunded rail infrastructure.

This incident follows a deadly high-speed train crash near Adamuz in southern Spain just two days earlier, which claimed 42 lives. Among the victims was a family whose six-year-old daughter survived and was found wandering alone along the tracks after the accident. The family had been returning from a special outing to Madrid, marking a tragic end to their holiday celebration.

Rail services in the area continue to face disruptions, with another train axle coming off the track south of Girona on the same day, further emphasizing the challenges faced by Spain's commuter rail network.
