Human hand outline may be oldest rock art in the world, researchers say

Researchers have identified what may be the oldest known example of rock art: a faint hand stencil found in the Liang Metanduno cave on the Indonesian island of Muna. This reddish outline, created by blowing pigment over a hand pressed against the cave wall, has been dated to at least 67,800 years ago, surpassing previous records for ancient rock art. The unique style of the stencil, with reshaped pointed fingers, suggests a deeper symbolic meaning possibly linked to early humans' relationship with animals. The discovery not only highlights the creative expression of early populations migrating through Southeast Asia but also provides new evidence supporting the theory that modern humans arrived in Australia earlier than previously thought, around 60,000 to 65,000 years ago.
