Lebanese social entrepreneur Omar Itani, co-founder of FabricAID, has been honored as one of 21 global recipients of the Social Entrepreneurs and Innovators of the Year Award by the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship. FabricAID collects, sanitizes, and resells secondhand clothing at affordable prices in marginalized communities across Lebanon and Jordan, with plans to expand into Egypt. Since its founding, the organization has sold over one million items and reached 200,000 beneficiaries, offering dignified shopping experiences and repurposing unsellable garments for other uses. Amid regional challenges, Itani encourages young entrepreneurs to view obstacles as opportunities, highlighting the potential for social innovation in the Middle East. Awardees join a three-year program with the Schwab Foundation, gaining access to a global network and resources to scale their impact.
