A United States drone strike in northeastern Yemen on Sunday killed at least three individuals suspected of being members of the local Al‑Qaeda branch, according to a Yemeni security official. The attack targeted a house in Marib province's Wadi Abida district, with three missiles reportedly striking the building and causing several additional injuries. Local residents observed drones overhead before the explosions destroyed the house, but there has been no official response from either the United States military or Yemen's internationally recognized government.
The United States has a history of conducting drone operations in Yemen against Al‑Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, a group considered highly dangerous by Washington. The group has claimed responsibility for several attacks in Yemen and abroad, including the 2015 Charlie Hebdo killings in Paris. Last year, the United States increased its reward for information on the group's leader, Sa'ad bin Atef al-Awlaki, who has called for attacks against the United States and its allies.
