Gaza's Rafah border crossing with Egypt saw renewed activity on Sunday as Israel announced the limited resumption of travel to and from the territory, marking a significant step in the ongoing ceasefire process. The crossing, which has been largely closed since Israeli forces seized it in May 2024, is now being prepared for fuller operation, with Palestinian residents expected to pass through once preparations are complete.
Palestinian security officers and ambulances moved through the crossing, joining a European Union mission that will supervise entry and exit. Initially, only a small number of people will be allowed to cross, with no goods permitted. Thousands of Palestinians, including those needing medical care, hope to leave Gaza, while others outside the territory await their return.
Israel and Egypt will vet travelers, and European Union agents will oversee the process. The reopening follows the recovery of the last hostage in Gaza and is part of the second phase of a ceasefire agreement, which includes new governance and security arrangements for Gaza. The number of travelers is expected to increase if the system proves effective.
