The decision led to a mass withdrawal of writers and the eventual cancellation of the festival, prompting apologies from the Adelaide Festival organisers and renewed debate about free speech and anti-Palestinian racism. Dr Abdel-Fattah has since been invited to speak at a new event, Constellations: Not Writers' Week, alongside former festival director Louise Adler, who also resigned in protest. Both Abdel-Fattah and Adler have spoken out about the importance of intellectual freedom and the need for greater racial literacy in public institutions.
