The United Nations human rights chief, Volker Turk, has issued an urgent appeal for $400 million to address escalating human rights crises in countries such as Sudan and Myanmar. Due to significant funding cuts from major donors, the office has been forced to reduce its operations, conducting less than half the number of monitoring missions compared to the previous year and scaling back its presence in 17 countries. These financial shortfalls have resulted in major program reductions, including a 60 percent cut to the Myanmar initiative and up to 75 percent reductions in efforts to prevent gender-based violence and protect the rights of marginalized communities. Turk warned that the current funding crisis is severely undermining the ability to monitor abuses, gather evidence, and support international justice efforts, urging countries to increase their support to avoid further setbacks in global human rights protection.
