A judge has ordered National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir to immediately approve the promotion of Superintendent Rinat Saban, a police detective whose advancement he had blocked for more than nine months. The court rejected his request for further delay, ruling that the promotion must proceed without additional obstruction.
Saban was involved in investigating and later testifying in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's corruption trial. Although Ben Gvir initially avoided stating his reasons for preventing her promotion, he later acknowledged that his opposition was tied to her role in what he described as an 'illegal' trial.
The Jerusalem District Court previously determined that the minister's refusal was marked by extreme irrationality and likely driven by improper considerations. The judge warned that continued delays could harm police independence and the rule of law, stressing that any further obstruction would amount to ongoing persecution and damage to democratic governance.
