Risk of 'escalation' if Iran attacked: deputy foreign minister

Iran's deputy foreign minister Kazem Gharibabadi warned that any attack on Iran would risk a wider regional escalation, after the United States president threatened possible strikes over Tehran's nuclear programme. Speaking at the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva, he urged countries committed to peace to act to prevent further conflict and said responsibility for any broader consequences would lie with those initiating or supporting aggression.

Gharibabadi said Iran remains committed to diplomacy and dialogue, pointing to recent indirect talks with the United States in Geneva hosted by Oman. Another round of discussions is expected, which he described as an opportunity to address differences and build confidence, provided negotiations are based on mutual respect and international law without threats or coercion.

While emphasizing diplomacy, he stressed that Iran is prepared to defend its sovereignty and would exercise its right to self-defence if necessary. He also called for meaningful progress on disarmament through balanced, legally binding commitments and urged nuclear-armed states to work toward a comprehensive nuclear weapons convention.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told the conference that the world is experiencing 'chaos and change', warning that violations of international law and the reckless use of force are undermining global security and trust.
