After nearly two decades of delays and failed procurement attempts, India is set to address a critical shortage in its mid-air refuelling capability. During Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Israel, a new agreement is expected to be signed that will see Israel Aerospace Industries partner with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited to convert six pre-owned Boeing 767 aircraft into military tanker aircraft.
India currently operates a small fleet of ageing refuelling aircraft with inconsistent serviceability, leaving gaps in preparedness for potential two-front conflicts. Tanker aircraft are essential for extending the combat range, endurance and operational flexibility of fighter jets, maritime patrol aircraft and strike platforms.
The collaboration also supports India's domestic defence manufacturing goals by involving Indian engineers in the conversion process and strengthening long-term aerospace expertise. While the addition of six tankers will not completely eliminate the shortfall, it is expected to significantly enhance India's power projection capabilities, particularly across the Indian Ocean and in high-intensity multi-front scenarios.
