The family of United Nations special rapporteur Francesca Albanese has filed a lawsuit against President Donald Trump and senior members of his administration over sanctions imposed on her last year. The plaintiffs are her husband, Massimiliano Cali, and their minor daughter, identified by her initials. The suit was filed in federal court in Washington, District of Columbia.
Albanese was sanctioned for what the administration described as political and economic warfare against the United States and Israel. She has said the measures have severely disrupted her professional and financial life. Her husband and daughter argue that the sanctions also harm them, noting that the family owns a home in Washington and considers itself part of the national community.
The lawsuit claims the sanctions violate constitutional protections for free speech, protection against unreasonable seizure, and due process. While Albanese and her husband are not citizens, their daughter is, and the suit argues she has standing to bring the claims. The family is asking the court to declare the sanctions unconstitutional.
