Donald Trump has authorized the deployment of a squadron of self-detonating drones as nuclear negotiations between the United States and Iran have collapsed, raising fears of a potential military conflict. The experimental unit, known as Task Force Scorpion, has been approved for deployment by the Defense Department.
The drone squadron is part of a broader military build-up in the Middle East, described as the largest expansion of forces in the region since the 2003 invasion of Iraq. The move follows the breakdown of diplomatic talks over Iran’s nuclear program.
A spokesperson for United States Central Command said the unit was established last year to quickly provide evolving combat drone capabilities to forces in the region, underscoring the growing role of advanced unmanned systems in modern warfare.
