The Israel Defense Forces said it carried out overnight airstrikes in the Gaza Strip after armed Hamas operatives emerged from a tunnel in the Rafah area, crossing onto the Israeli side of the ceasefire line. Troops from the Golani Brigade stationed in eastern Rafah identified the gunmen and directed an airstrike, which the military said killed several of them.
The military described the incident as a violation of the ceasefire agreement. Following the initial strike, additional airstrikes were conducted overnight targeting what the army called armed Hamas operatives.
Palestinian media reported that five people were killed in the strikes, including three in an attack on a Hamas police station near Khan Younis. The military has previously said that dozens of Hamas operatives were believed to be hiding in tunnels in the eastern Rafah area, with around 50 reported killed or captured in recent months.
