Iran’s foreign minister has warned that all military bases and assets of what he described as hostile forces in the region will be considered legitimate targets, following airstrikes by the United States and Israel. In a letter to the Secretary-General of the United Nations and the president of the Security Council, he called the attacks a clear violation of the United Nations Charter and an act of open armed aggression against Iran.
He said Iran would use all necessary defensive capabilities under its right to self-defense and would continue to act decisively until the attacks stop completely. The letter accused the United States and Israel of coordinated strikes on defensive and civilian sites across several Iranian cities and said both countries would bear full responsibility for any further escalation.
An emergency meeting of the Security Council has been scheduled in New York at the request of several member states. The Secretary-General condemned the military escalation and warned that continued hostilities risk a wider regional conflict, urging an immediate ceasefire and a return to negotiations. The United Nations human rights chief also called for restraint, warning that civilians ultimately pay the highest price in such conflicts.
