Japan’s Foreign Ministry said a second Japanese national has been detained in Iran and called for the early release of both individuals. The ministry confirmed that the second detention occurred before the Feb. 28 military strikes on Iran by the United States and Israel, adding that the detainee is safe and in good health. No further details were provided, including whether the case is connected to the earlier detention of a Japanese journalist.
Japanese officials had previously acknowledged the detention of the first individual but did not disclose the person’s identity. The Committee to Protect Journalists identified the detainee as Shinnosuke Kawashima, the Tehran bureau chief of Japan’s public broadcaster, stating he was arrested on Jan. 20 by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and later transferred to Evin Prison. The organization has called for the immediate release of Kawashima and other journalists held for their work.
