The Liberal Democrats have urged Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer to advise the King to cancel his planned state visit to the United States next month, citing rising tensions over the conflict involving Iran. Party leader Sir Ed Davey argued that proceeding with the այց would hand President Donald Trump a significant diplomatic advantage during a period of military escalation in the Middle East.
The dispute follows American and Israeli strikes on Iran, which have strained relations between London and Washington. Sir Keir initially declined to allow American aircraft to use British bases for bombing raids, though permission was later granted for what were described as defensive strikes. British forces have also been involved in intercepting Iranian drones and missiles.
President Trump has publicly criticised the prime minister’s handling of the crisis, prompting further political pressure at home. While Sir Keir has downplayed the rift and emphasised ongoing security cooperation, some members of the governing party are reportedly concerned about the political impact of maintaining close ties with the American administration as the proposed royal visit approaches.
