Pakistan Navy has launched 'Operation Muhafiz-ul-Bahr' to protect national energy shipments amid rising tensions in the Middle East that have disrupted key maritime routes. The move comes as the Strait of Hormuz, a vital oil transit corridor between Iran and Oman, faces blockages linked to ongoing conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel.
Global oil prices have surged to their highest levels since mid 2022, climbing more than 25 percent to 119.50 dollars per barrel, as supply cuts and fears of prolonged shipping disruptions rattle markets. Pakistan is expecting three oil shipments this week and is working to prevent potential fuel shortages as price pressures mount.
According to the military, naval ships are currently escorting two merchant vessels, one of which is due to arrive in Karachi on Monday. With about 90 percent of the country’s trade conducted by sea, officials said the operation aims to ensure secure and uninterrupted maritime trade and energy supplies despite the evolving regional security environment.
