Dr. Jay Miller's return from a family trip to India turned into a 62-hour escape across four continents after his flight from Doha to Dallas was forced to turn back amid escalating conflict between Israel, the United States and Iran. With airspace closed across much of the Middle East, he found himself stranded in Qatar as explosions shook his hotel and thousands of travelers were left without clear options.
Unable to secure government assistance, Dr. Miller decided to chart his own path home. He traveled by car from Doha to Saudi Arabia, navigating border crossings and visa checkpoints before boarding a flight to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. After a brief layover that included a visit to the National Museum of Ethiopia, he continued on to Chicago, with a refueling stop in Rome, and then finally to New Orleans.
The journey cost nearly $10,000 and involved repeated delays, security checks and a minor aircraft collision before his final departure. Nearly a week after his original flight was diverted, Dr. Miller arrived home exhausted but relieved, having relied entirely on his own planning to escape a rapidly deteriorating situation.
