Ukraine has reached a milestone in its war effort by developing the capacity to manufacture drones without components imported from China. In underground workshops and expanding domestic factories, Ukrainian companies now produce critical parts such as circuit boards, antennas, flight controllers and radio systems, reducing reliance on foreign supply chains. Drones have become central to the battlefield, accounting for the vast majority of Russian casualties, according to Ukrainian military officials.
The shift comes after export restrictions from Beijing exposed vulnerabilities in Ukraine’s dependence on Chinese parts. In the first year of the full-scale invasion, nearly all Ukrainian drones and their components came from China. By 2025, however, the share of Chinese parts in Ukrainian drones had dropped significantly as local production ramped up and European suppliers filled some gaps.
Despite the progress, fully eliminating Chinese inputs remains difficult and costly. Many raw materials, including carbon fiber and batteries, are still largely sourced from China due to price and global supply dominance. Ukrainian officials argue that expanding domestic production strengthens the country’s strategic position, reduces exposure to political pressure and ensures continued drone manufacturing even if foreign supplies are disrupted.
