Australia has directed all non-essential government officials in Israel and the United Arab Emirates to leave, citing a deteriorating security situation in the region. Foreign Minister Penny Wong said essential staff would remain to assist Australians who require support.
The government continues to advise its citizens not to travel to Israel or the United Arab Emirates and is urging Australians currently in the Middle East to depart if it is safe to do so. Wong warned that opportunities to leave may become limited.
Approximately 115,000 Australian nationals are believed to be across the Middle East, with about 2,600 having already returned home, according to government figures.
