A large explosion struck Ferdowsi Square in Tehran on Friday during Quds Day, also known as Jerusalem Day, demonstrations, according to Iranian state television. The square, located near Tehran University and surrounded by government buildings, was filled with demonstrators at the time of the blast.
Video published by a semiofficial news agency showed gray smoke rising above the area as crowds chanted slogans including 'Death to Israel!' and 'Death to America!' Footage from the scene captured people shouting 'God is the greatest!' amid the smoke.
Senior figures from Iran’s political and judicial leadership were reported to be present at the demonstrations. The cause of the explosion was not immediately known, and there was no immediate official comment from Iranian authorities or from Israel’s military.
