Jet fuel prices are rising. That could make summer flights more...

Jet fuel prices are climbing sharply as war in the Middle East disrupts global oil supplies, increasing cost pressures on airlines ahead of the busy summer travel season. Industry experts say airfare increases are inevitable, particularly on long-haul international routes that consume more fuel. Several airlines outside the United States have already introduced fare hikes or fuel surcharges, and airline leaders warn that higher ticket prices may soon follow more broadly.

The conflict has constrained oil exports and disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for global oil supplies. As a result, jet fuel prices in the United States have surged from about $2.50 per gallon before the war to nearly $3.99 per gallon within two weeks. Fuel typically accounts for 20 percent to 25 percent of an airline’s operating costs, making sustained price increases especially burdensome.

While some airlines use fuel hedging to limit exposure to sudden price spikes, many carriers remain vulnerable, particularly if elevated prices persist. In addition to raising base fares, airlines may increase fees for seat upgrades, checked bags, and other add-ons, or adjust flight schedules and routes to manage higher costs. Airspace closures in parts of the Middle East have also forced longer flight paths, adding further fuel expenses.

Travelers planning summer trips may be able to reduce the impact by booking early, remaining flexible with travel dates, and using reward points where possible. Analysts expect more airlines to introduce fare increases or surcharges if fuel prices remain high in the coming weeks.
