Government transfers NIS 2.6B to Defense Ministry for 'urgent defense procurement'

The government approved a late-night transfer of 2.6 billion Israeli shekels to the Defense Ministry for what it described as urgent and essential defense procurement, as fighting continues in Iran and Lebanon. The decision was made through a telephone vote.

The move followed a report by a United States news outlet claiming that Israel is running critically low on ballistic missile interceptors. There has been no official confirmation of that report, and some of its details appear inconsistent with known aspects of Israel’s interception operations.

According to a government statement, 1.5 billion Israeli shekels will be cut from the 2025 to 2026 budget allocated for interest and commission payments, while the remaining 1.1 billion Israeli shekels will be taken from the budgets of other ministries during the same period. If the 2026 to 2027 budget is approved later this month as planned, the full 2.6 billion Israeli shekels will instead be drawn from the Defense Ministry’s regular allocation.

Last week, the government also approved a revised budget that increased Defense Ministry funding by 32 billion Israeli shekels in response to the ongoing war with Iran.
