Security upgrades at Temple Israel synagogue in West Bloomfield, Michigan, prevented what officials said could have been a mass-casualty attack when a heavily armed man attempted to storm the building while about 140 children were inside. The attacker drove his vehicle into the entrance and fired into the building, but trained security personnel responded immediately and fatally shot him. One guard sustained minor injuries.
Authorities identified the suspect as Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, a 41-year-old United States citizen born in Lebanon. Investigators said he began shooting through his vehicle window after crashing into the building and later shot himself as the vehicle caught fire. Officials noted that his brother had previously been a Hezbollah commander killed in Lebanon.
The synagogue had recently strengthened its security, hiring a veteran police officer to lead its armed team and conducting active-shooter training in coordination with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. State leaders praised the response, and a rabbi from the congregation said 'only a miracle' prevented a tragedy.
The attempted attack comes amid a documented global rise in antisemitic incidents. In response to increasing threats, Jewish organizations have expanded funding for security, education and community resilience efforts worldwide.
