The Israeli military confirmed that senior Iranian official Ali Larijani was killed in an overnight airstrike in Tehran. The strike was also confirmed by Defense Minister Israel Katz, who said Larijani had been serving as the effective leader of Iran following the death of former supreme leader Ali Khamenei.
According to the military, Larijani, who headed Iran’s National Security Council, assumed leadership after Khamenei was killed in the opening strikes of the war on February 28. He was described as a central figure in directing Iran’s political and security strategy, including its military campaign against Israel and coordination of international activities.
The military further alleged that Larijani played a key role in suppressing domestic unrest earlier this year, overseeing violent crackdowns on demonstrators during a wave of protests across Iran.
