An uneasy calm has settled over the southern Lebanese city of Tyre as fighting between Israel and the armed group Hezbollah intensifies. Israel has ordered civilians to evacuate areas north of the Zahrani river, warning that anyone near Hezbollah positions risks their life. Much of the city is shuttered and largely deserted, yet some residents remain, either unable to leave or determined to stay despite the danger.

Nearly a million people across Lebanon have been displaced in the past two weeks, according to Lebanese authorities, with hundreds reported killed in Israeli strikes. Israel says it has launched limited ground operations targeting Hezbollah strongholds in southern Lebanon following rocket and drone attacks by the group. Aid organizations warn that shelters and food kitchens are struggling to cope as the humanitarian crisis deepens.

In Tyre, those who remain describe a mix of fear, defiance and necessity. Some residents say they cannot afford to relocate, while others insist they will not abandon their homes despite evacuation orders and nearby air strikes. Businesses have largely closed, and livelihoods have been disrupted, but many say they are determined to endure the conflict in their city rather than flee north.
