Donald Trump given shamrock as Micheal Martin urges co-operation

Irish premier Micheal Martin presented President Donald Trump with a crystal bowl of shamrock at the White House as part of Saint Patrick's Day celebrations, urging greater co-operation between the United States and European leaders. He called for fewer trade barriers and stressed the importance of negotiation, de-escalation and respect for international rules in addressing global conflicts, including the war involving Iran.

The meeting took place amid tensions after President Trump signalled he expected stronger European support for a bombing campaign carried out with Israel against Iran. During their Oval Office discussion, the president defended the military action, arguing it prevented a wider nuclear conflict and saying European nations should assist the United States as it had supported them in other conflicts.

Mr Martin defended British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and emphasised the value of strong transatlantic relations, expressing hope that differences could be resolved. He also highlighted Ireland's commitment to peacekeeping and called for progress toward ending ongoing conflicts.

The visit included further engagements at the Capitol and meetings with senior United States officials. While some Irish opposition figures criticised Mr Martin for not more forcefully challenging the president on Middle East policy, the two leaders also discussed trade, energy, and immigration co-operation between Ireland and the United States.
