Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has urged United States President Donald Trump and United Kingdom Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer to meet and find common ground following repeated criticism from Trump. In an interview after talks in London, Zelensky said he would not tell Trump what to do but believed a meeting could 're-load the relationship' and help form a united position.
Tensions have risen after war triggered by United States and Israeli strikes on Iran spilled into diplomatic disagreements, with Trump criticizing North Atlantic Treaty Organization allies and expressing disappointment in Starmer. Zelensky warned that division among western leaders could be damaging and said he had a very bad feeling about how the conflict in Iran was affecting efforts to end Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Starmer, who welcomed Zelensky to Downing Street during his European tour, reaffirmed that the United Kingdom would not be drawn into a wider war and stressed the importance of keeping focus on Ukraine. Addressing lawmakers in Parliament, Zelensky condemned the governments in Russia and Iran and called for unity to prevent regimes built on hatred from threatening Europe and its partners.
