An international media association has condemned what it described as an unprovoked assault by Israeli police on journalists in Jerusalem, saying a producer for Cable News Network suffered a fractured wrist during the incident. The Foreign Press Association said officers aggressively confronted reporters who were documenting Muslims attempting to pray outside the Old City walls.
According to the association, several journalists were detained, equipment was damaged and memory cards were confiscated. Witnesses reported that police used batons against members of the media and at least one Palestinian worshiper was detained during the confrontation.
The incident occurred as holy sites in East Jerusalem have been closed for security reasons following the outbreak of war with Iran. The Foreign Press Association and the Union of Journalists in Israel called for immediate action against the officers involved and urged authorities to safeguard press freedoms.
