Opposition MPs question MEA over govt stand on Iran war | India News - The Times of India

Opposition members of Parliament questioned the government during a parliamentary committee meeting over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Israel, held shortly before Israel and the United States carried out strikes on Iran. They also raised concerns about the government’s silence following the killing of Iran’s supreme leader and asked whether India’s traditional diplomatic stance on West Asia had shifted.

The ministry of external affairs briefed the committee on the safety and security of the Indian diaspora in the region, particularly in Iran. Members sought clarity on the broader impact of the conflict, including potential effects on oil and gas supplies. The ministry said it would respond in writing to several queries, as the foreign secretary was unable to attend the meeting.

Committee chair Shashi Tharoor said around 9,000 Indians remain in Iran, though not all wish to leave. He noted that commercial travel routes through Gulf countries such as the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Oman remain accessible, making movement in and out of the region relatively manageable.
