Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O'Neill has criticised the Government's proposed energy price intervention as 'completely tone-deaf' amid rising heating costs. She backed a call from Scotland's First Minister John Swinney for an urgent meeting with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer to address spiralling energy prices.
The Prime Minister recently confirmed that Northern Ireland will receive £17 million from a £53 million support package to help with heating oil costs linked to the war in the Middle East. However, Sinn Fein said this would amount to just £35 per household relying on home heating oil.
O'Neill argued that the proposed payment fails to reflect the severity of the crisis, noting that some households have seen their bills double. She called for immediate and meaningful action to provide greater support for workers and families facing mounting financial pressure.
