Multiple waves of unidentified drones repeatedly entered restricted airspace over Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana, home to the United States Air Force's nuclear-capable bomber fleet. Officials confirmed that between March 9 and March 15, unauthorized unmanned aircraft were detected over sensitive areas, triggering a shelter-in-place order during the first incident amid warnings from the Federal Bureau of Investigation about potential drone threats on United States soil.
An internal military briefing document reported that later incursions involved swarms of 12 to 15 drones flying over key facilities, including the flight line. The devices were described as custom-built and capable of using advanced signals that allowed them to resist radio-frequency and electronic warfare jamming systems typically used to disable unauthorized drones.
The incursions forced the base to close its runway to incoming and outgoing aircraft, raising safety concerns. Officials said the incidents remain under investigation in coordination with federal and local law enforcement and the Federal Aviation Administration, emphasizing that unauthorized drone flights over military installations are a federal crime.
