Thousands gathered in the Sydney suburb of Lakemba to mark the end of daily fasting during Ramadan, sharing food at a large community meal outside one of Australia's biggest mosques. While the evening was marked by unity and celebration, a visible police presence underscored growing fears within the Muslim community amid a sharp rise in anti Muslim threats and attacks.

Community leaders say incidents of Islamophobia have surged dramatically since the 7 October 2023 attacks in the Middle East and increased again after the deadly shooting at a Jewish celebration in Bondi Beach, which authorities said was driven by extremist ideology. Reports of abuse now average far higher than in previous years, with many cases believed to go unreported. Muslim Australians describe experiences ranging from verbal harassment to women having their headscarves pulled off.

Tensions have also exposed deeper fractures in Australia's multicultural identity. Political leaders visiting Lakemba were met with anger from some worshippers, while far right rhetoric and anti immigration politics have drawn criticism for emboldening racism. Experts and community advocates warn that repeated incidents risk eroding social cohesion and leaving minorities feeling abandoned.

Despite these challenges, local leaders say events like the mass meal are more important than ever, offering solidarity and reassurance. Yet many Muslims question whether the country's commitment to diversity extends beyond symbolism, arguing that discrimination persists in everyday life, from public spaces to employment opportunities.
