Joe Kent, the former director of the United States National Counterterrorism Center, has denied allegations that he improperly shared classified information after reports that federal investigators are examining a possible leak. The investigation was said to have begun before his resignation earlier this week. Kent said he is not concerned about the allegations because he believes he did nothing wrong, but expressed worry about the government targeting individuals who speak out.
Kent resigned on Tuesday, stating he could not in good conscience support the Trump administration’s war in Iran. He argued that Iran posed no imminent threat to the United States and claimed the conflict was driven by pressure from Israel and its American supporters.
President Donald Trump responded by saying he believed Kent was weak on security and that officials who did not view Iran as a threat were not wanted in his administration. Other administration officials have also distanced themselves from Kent and his assessment of the situation.
