Iran has reportedly launched two intermediate range ballistic missiles at a joint United States and United Kingdom military base on Diego Garcia, a remote island in the Indian Ocean. According to multiple United States officials, neither missile struck the base, with one failing in flight and the other intercepted. The facility hosts bombers, nuclear submarines and missile destroyers and is located about 4,000 kilometers from Iran.
The strike comes as the war between the United States, Israel and Iran enters its third week. President Donald Trump said the United States was considering 'winding down' military action and claimed the country was close to achieving its objectives. He also criticized the United Kingdom government for what he described as a slow response in allowing the use of its base.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi urged British Prime Minister Keir Starmer not to join United States military efforts, warning that Iran would exercise its right to self defense. Starmer has said the United Kingdom would protect its personnel in the region but would not be drawn into a wider war. The United States and Israel maintain that their primary objective is to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon.
