How Iran's IRGC rebooted Hezbollah to be ready for war

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps rebuilt Hezbollah's military command structure after the group was severely weakened by Israel during the 2024 war, including the killing of its leader Hassan Nasrallah and other senior commanders. Iranian officers were deployed to retrain fighters, oversee rearmament and directly supervise the Lebanese group's military wing, marking an unprecedented level of hands-on involvement.

The overhaul replaced Hezbollah's traditional hierarchical command with a decentralized network of small, compartmentalized units designed to prevent intelligence breaches. Iranian commanders also helped plan coordinated missile attacks launched simultaneously from Iran and Lebanon, a strategy carried out in March as Hezbollah entered the regional conflict in support of Tehran.

Despite heavy losses and diminished strength compared with previous years, Hezbollah has fired hundreds of missiles at Israel since early March, prompting a major Israeli offensive in Lebanon. Iranian personnel have also suffered casualties in Israeli strikes, even as Lebanon's government has sought the departure of Iranian nationals linked to Tehran.

The restructuring reflects Iran's long-standing role in creating and sustaining Hezbollah since 1982. Analysts say the new decentralized model mirrors early versions of the group and aims to ensure its resilience in the face of continued Israeli military pressure and the possibility of a broader war.
